Race Preview: The Nagazi

Today we preview the fourth race of Aereon: the Nagazi!

Nagazi

Other Names: Naga, Snakes (derogatory)

Summary

Nagazi are biped, amphibious reptilians that stand 1.5 to 1.8 metres tall, and weigh 80 to 100 kilograms on average, although these vary depending on an individual Nagazi’s clade. They possess streamline bodies ideal for swimming, with a large, strong tail for propulsion and webbed feet for manoeuvrability. Thick, rugged scales cover their body, with colours ranging from dark green to browns and blacks. Being amphibious they naturally breathe air, and are able to hold their breath for over half an hour, but require a humid environment or constant access to water to survive.

The Nagazi have a feudal-fascist society, where differing families control various military, manufacturing, and economic interests. The more of these interests the family controls, the more political power they possess, and the more votes they have in the High Chamber. The High Chamber is overseen by the Kori Keisari, or Lord Emperor, and controlled by five Fal’Keisari (“Deep Lords”) who represent their families’ interests.

While the Nagazi are structured into ‘families’, they do not work in the same way as those of any surface dweller might consider them. Instead they are born and raised in clutches, each with a specific role within society as determined by their clade. There are four clades; the Keisari (nobility), the Sotami (soldiers), the Fiks (intellectuals), and the Mult (workers).

The Nagazi do not believe in spirits or gods of any kind, rather they have a materialistic and naturalistic worldview that resembles a ritualized and sacred scientific method. They know of the forces that drive the universe and seek to control them through technologies and understanding.

Their culture is on the verge of a civil war over what to do about the rest of the world. The old guard are content to continue on in isolation. They are opposed by a new faction that believes that the Nagazi should go out into the world, rather than hide from it. This faction is divided though. Some believe in peaceful trade and coexistence and another, smaller, faction believes that the Nagazi should conquer and bring the blessing of their society to barbarians of the surface world.

Description

Nagazi are descended from large, amphibious reptilians. On average they stand 1.5 to 1.8 metres in height, and weight 80 to 100 kilograms. They maintain a semi-digitigrade stance (where the heel does not rest on the ground whilst walking, but not as high as a digitigrade stance), with a slight stoop. They possess streamlined bodies that are ideal for swimming, with a large, strong tail for propulsion, and webbed feet which tuck into their sides to reduce water resistance during movement. Unlike humans their hands only possess three fingers, with a single opposable thumb. Similarly, their feet have three toes with webbing between them, and a vestigial dew claw. Rather than be used to propel the Nagazi through the water, the webbed feet are used instead to execute fast turns and sudden movements. They naturally breathe air, but are able to hold their breath for over half an hour. However, due to their aquatic nature they require a humid environment or a way to remain hydrated to survive.

Thick, rugged scales cover their entire bodies, with colours ranging from dark green to browns and blacks. They have softer scales on their bellies and sides, while their dorsal surfaces are armoured with larger, stronger scales (osteoderms), acting as a form of natural armour. Despite the thickness of this armour, the Nagazi are still able to absorb heat through them via a network of small capillaries which allows blood through the scales.

Most Nagazi (the Mult clade are the exception) possess semi-flexible, cartilage based tendrils that contain specialised cells known as chromatophores that allow them to shift in colour with a Nagazi’s emotional state - a reason why many Nagazi wear hood-like coverings when in other civilisations. They also used to be used as a form of communication, although over time this skill has been lost save for a small few. These tendrils grow from the upper back of the skull, and on occasion, from the chin., and are usually mistakenly identified as hair by outsiders. Males also possess bony crests on their foreheads, with their size and shape differing by clade.

Nagazi possess a hybrid ectothermic-endothermic system, where their bodies can operate in an endothermic state when provided with sufficient sustenance. If they cannot achieve this, or they are in a thermally stable environment, their bodies can drop into an ectothermic state where their body heat is reliant on heat from the environment to maintain their metabolic rates.

Nagazi have superior night vision due to the combination of cones and rods in their eyes, making them excellent nocturnal predators. Their eyes have vertical-slit shaped pupils similar to domestic felines, and a nictitating membrane (third eyelid) which they use to protect their eyes whilst swimming, whilst also maintaining some visibility. Nagazi are also known to use their partially forked-tongue to detect, taste, and smell environmental stimuli similar to many other reptiles.

Like many reptiles, Nagazi reproduce by laying clutches of eggs in specific breeding pools, in which the newborn Nagazi they are then born and raised. The clutch a Nagazi is born to determines which clade they belong, and in turn their role in society.

Society

The Nagazi have a feudal-fascist society, where differing families control various military, manufacturing, and economic interests. The more of these interests the family controls, the more political power they possess, and the more votes they have in the High Chamber. The High Chamber is overseen by the Kori Keisari, or Lord Emperor. While the Kori Keisari appears to have the ultimate power within Nagazi society, in truth it lies with five Fal’Keisari (“Deep Lords”) and their families holdings, for without their support the Kori Keisari would be unable to enforce his will.

While the Nagazi are structured into ‘families’, they do not work in the same way as those of any surface dweller might consider them. Instead they are born and raised in clutches, each with a specific role within society. Weakness and lack of ability are not tolerated. These different roles have, over time, resulted in variations in physiology among the Nagazi that some might consider them different species altogether.

The roles, or clades, in society are:
  • Keisari (“Lord”): The Keisari are the diplomats, leaders and royalty, bred to excel at all things, particularly in the roles of leadership. They possess specialised glands that produce pheromones that are released through their scales, making those they are speaking to more suggestive and easier to control. Of all the clades they are most likely to be met by outsiders as they have the most freedom, and this has resulted in outsiders viewing them as the ‘average’ Nagazi, despite being one of the rarest clade.
  • Sotami (“Soldier”): These are the soldiers and warriors of the Nagazi, and are bred for endurance and a focused mind, and possess a slightly larger and stronger build, along with thicker scales on their dorsal surfaces. They stand 1.7 to 1.9 metres tall, and weigh 100 to 120 kilograms. The Sotami are all relegated into a series of families based on which clutch they were born to and the decisions of the High Chamber, and over the centuries have become somewhat specialized in specific tactics and skills.
  • Fiks (“Servant”): The Fiks Clade is the servant clade, bred for loyalty and intelligence, they are the smallest and physically weakest of the clades, standing 1.4 to 1.6 metres height, and weighing 60 to 80 kilograms. They also the scientists, intellectuals and teachers in the society.
  • Mult (“Dirt”): Their name literally meaning dirt, the Mult are the workers of society and are bred for strength and obedience. They are by far the physically largest of the Nagazi, averaging between 1.8 to 2.1 metres in height, and 120 to 160 kilograms in weight.
Nagazi technology specialises in material science, using incredibly advanced ceramics and glass in place of metal in their structures, vehicles, weapons and armour. They can also use advanced bio-ceramic coral growing and shaping techniques that are looked upon as being almost magical by the surface races. This technology was developed as a necessity to protect themselves from the Mists, lacking the option to take to the skies due to their reliance on a moist, humid environment.

Beliefs

The Nagazi do not believe in spirits or gods of any kind, rather they have a materialistic and naturalistic worldview that venerates ‘Forces’, such as fire and electricity. Many outsiders view it as a series of superstitions, though it is closer to a ritualized and sacred scientific method. They know of the forces that drive the universe and seek to control them through technologies and understanding.

Lands and Relations

Residing deep with the equatorial oceans near the Free Cities, Nagazi culture is on the verge of a civil war over what to do about the rest of the world, for it is their belief that they were the first people before the Kauri (undesirables) showed up and began to ruin the world, driving their predecessors into hiding.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world views the Nagazi with awe and fascination at best, with a sense of fear and suspicion more commonly associated with dealings with the cold, unblinking reptilians. Several attempts have been made by the Nagazi to alleviate these concerns, with diplomatic envoys sent to many cities, and research agreements developed.

Racial Aspect

The following things are always true about the Nagazi racial aspect:
  • Nagazi have excellent low-light vision, and suffer no penalties for poor vision in such conditions.
  • Nagazi are aquatic, and can hold their breath for over half an hour without penalty.
  • Nagazi are natural swimmers, and can move through the water as quickly as they can move on land without hindrance.
The Nagazi racial aspect can be invoked for:
    • Nagazi possess hardened scales that make them resistant to harm. Invoke this to resist a physical attack.
    • Nagazi are regarded as cold and calculating in their thought processes. Invoke when dealing with a situation that would require a rational and logical approach.
The Nagazi racial aspect can be compelled for:
    • Nagazi view themselves as the superior people. Compel when looking down on non-nagazi would be a hindrance.
    • Nagazi are perfectionists. Compel when something is not done just right for the Nagazi to sulk and blame others for their failings.
    • Nagazi are aquatic and require a regular supply of water to remain hydrated. Compel when such supplies are unavailable to cause the Nagazi to become weakened from lack of water.

    Stunts

The following extras are recommended when creating a Nagazi, each one representing an individual clade:
    • Keisari Clade: The Keisari possess specialised glands that produce pheromones that make those around them more open to suggestion and easier to manipulate. This grants them a +2 bonus to Rapport checks to Create an Advantage through manipulation of an individual's emotional state.
    • Sotami Clade (Tireless Endurance): Bred for endurance and a focused mind, the Sotami make excellent soldiers. This grants them +2 for Physique checks involving the use of endurance or stamina.
    • Sotami Clade (Hardened Scales): Sotami also possess thicker, reinforced scales on the dorsal surfaces of their body, as well as increased protection to the more vulnerable parts of their body. This natural armour grants them Armour:1 against all attacks.
    • Fiks Clade: The Fiks clade are known for their intelligence and single minded, almost emotionless, drive to learn and discover knowledge. However, they are also the physically weakest of the Nagazi. They gain +2 bonus to all Academic checks, but suffer a -2 penalty to Physique checks involving the use of ‘raw strength’.
    • Mult Clade: The largest and physically strongest of the Nagazi, the Mult are bred to be workers perfect for manual labour. They gain a +2 bonus to all ‘raw strength’ applications of Physique.
